Campaign Strategy Guide

‘How-to’ guides and training resources to demystify campaign strategy. Social movements become more powerful as more people are equipped to analyse their political context, consider paths to change and mindfully plan tactics.

More Information

The Campaign Strategy Guide is the first instalment of the People Power Manual, a resource created for campaigners, activist educators and facilitators.

Campaign strategy needn’t be mystifying, lonely or stressful. Social movements become more powerful as more people are equipped to analyse their political context, consider paths to change and mindfully plan tactics.

Our Campaign Strategy Guide equips activist educators to facilitate a range of participatory exercises with activists, organisers and citizens. It can also be used as a do-it-yourself guide for campaigners. The guide incorporates 20 handouts, several workshop schedules and process guides for 27 strategising processes that have been tried and tested by thousands of campaigners.

The Campaign Strategy Guide can be purchased as a downloadable file (pdf) or as a 160 page hard copy guide printed on recycled-FSC paper. Purchase the hard copy and you will also receive the download.

“There is an old saying that the harder you work, the luckier you get. But no amount of hard work on a campaign will make up for a bad strategy. Thankfully, developing good strategy and running powerful campaigns isn’t rocket surgery, and this manual is jam-packed full of helpful tips to guide you on your way.” — John Hepburn, Executive Director, The Sunrise Project.

The People Power Manual is an initiative of the Change Agency and Pasifika.

Community Organising Guide

The Community Organising Guide is a unique resource for campaigners, community leaders and activist educators. These 292 pages of training resources deepen our understanding of relational meetings and self-interest, the power of story in organising, building alliances, coalitions and networks, holding decision-makers accountable and leadership development.

More Information

The Community Organising Guide is a unique resource for campaigners, community leaders and activist educators. It’s a collection of 39 process guides, 50 handouts 4 original case studies and 3 sample workshop schedules: everything you need to design and lead participatory workshops with activists, organisers and citizens. The 292 pages of training resources deepen our understanding of relational meetings and self-interest, the power of story in organising, building alliances, coalitions and networks, holding decision-makers accountable and leadership development. The guide also sharpens core organising skills such as recruitment, doorknocking and phonebanking.

The Community Organising Guide draws on wisdom gained in social movements over several decades. It doesn’t advocate ‘one right way’, but integrates broad-based, social movement and grassroots organising approaches. The Guide is the second of six instalments in the People Power Manual series and follows the August 2015 launch of our Campaign Strategy Guide.

The People Power Manual is an initiative of Pasifika and the Change Agency.

Alycia Gawthorne, GetUp! organiser
The Fellowship has challenged the way I previously thought about campaigning and community organising, and made me rethink how I approach my work. It’s afforded me the space to take a step back and look at the entire movement. I feel like the skills I take away from the Fellowship will be invaluable, but far more important will be the deeper understanding I have about my role and how it fits within a larger movement.

The People Power Manual is a resource for activist educators. It is a collection of participatory and experiential processes and handouts organised around six themes:

1. Campaign Strategy
(1st edition launched 2015; 3rd edition 2020)

2. Community Organising
(October 2016)

3. Civil Resistance
(forthcoming)

4. Working with Groups

5. Returning to Strength: Movement Resilience in the Face of Repression

6. Educating the Activist Educator

The People Power Manual has been created to support facilitators and educators working to help local action groups and social movements win environmental and social justice goals. The manual is published electronically as a series of guides. Hard copies of each guide are also available. All funds generated by the sale of the manual go back into supporting grassroots social movement education projects. The manual has been written primarily for educators, trainers and facilitators who are looking for processes to use in their activist education work. We don’t expect people will read the guides cover to cover like a book. Instead, we imagine most people will dip in and out of these pages. We’ve written the guides for readers who already understand the concepts and theory that the processes and handouts are based on. For those interested in further reading, each guide recommends our favourite books, manuals and online resources.

We did a two-day workshop with The Change Agency early this year which provided our organisation with some much-needed tools for strategic campaigning and planning. There was nothing but positive feedback from our staff and board members about what they gained from the two days spent with James and Sam. The power mapping exercise was particularly insightful for staff and board members alike and as a result our campaigns are more pro-active - we are seeing results!
