what's on top

The Change Agency recently participated in an online dialogue with non-violence trainers from around the world. It was inspiring to share ideas with people committed to making change through strategic and well prepared direct action in a range of political contexts and social movements. You can view the archived discussion by joining the New Tactics in Human Rights community.

In October, we're planning 2-3 day Mobilising for Change (MfC) workshops in Melbourne and Hobart. Let us know if you're interested in participating in or helping to host these workshops.

We received a lot of interest in the Liberation Book Club, launched in the last enews with this discussion starter. Scroll down for this month's feature article on diversity in activist organisations.

Building the climate movement online

This month, we're starting a new phase of our climate action research project in partnership with Friends of the Earth Australia and with the support of the Reichstein Foundation and the Electronic Community Networking Association. The project will explore how online tools can be effectively used to build the climate movement. it will include interviews with climate change activists, an online survey and the creation of an inventory of online tools used by community groups in their campaigns to prevent dangerous climate change.

As an enews recipient, you'll receive an invitation to participate in our online survey in coming weeks. We're looking forward to hearing your ideas and experiences.

great online resources

Reflective peacebuilding: a planning, monitoring and learning toolkit - Compiled by John Paul Lederach, Hal Culbertson and Reina Neufeldt and published by the J B Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at Uni of Notre Dame. This toolkit includes the excellent 'four dimensions' exercise (pp.18-19) to explore different dimensions of conflict transformation (individual / relationship / systems & structures / culture).

Basecamp provides a virtual office for WEA - Christine Herzog, coordinator of the Auckland Workers Education Association, reflects on how AWEA have used the online Basecamp project management platform for communicating, projects and decision-making. A useful summary of Basecamp's strengths and limits. (The tCA team use Basecamp extensively.)

(Green) Power to the People - Emma Pittaway (2008) examines the emergence of community climate action groups and their potential for political effectiveness. A great resource for people convening or joining community action groups who are keen to transform their initial enthusiasm into sustained and effective action. (332k pdf)

Sending the protest message - What makes a protest action effective? What potential choices do organisers have and how are audiences likely to respond to
messages? A new article by Brian Martin and Jørgen Johansen.

Why diversity of tactics? - "Just as some shortsightedly reject tactics other than their own as ineffective, others feel the need to compete to determine whose tactics are the most committed or the most impressive... No tactic can be effective alone; all can be effective together.
